orders trickling in...

Amazingly enough, even at this time of year, we've had a few orders for both trees and tomatoes come in! Encouraging to say the least, and this shows that we can be a success in our first year.

Welcome message

Like the title says, we'd like to welcome everyone who reads our blog!

We're just getting up and running, and have a website started and ads across Canada on Kijiji.ca (check your local area!). The website is http://www.southsaskseedlings.com/ so go take a look.

We have a VERY new type of tomato available in the spring for gardeners...what if you could produce as many as 70 tomatoes on a single plant? Farmer's Markets, canning, eating...WOW! And guess what? They're super drought-tolerant, because they have such a well-developed root system. Now, think...if they are drought-tolerant, and you live in a region that gets lots of rainfall...what kind of production would you get then? LOADS! One more advantage they have is that planted close together, they will grow and support each other as well as shading the soil beneath to reduce or even eliminate weed growth. You can also buy plastic mulch from us to make your ENTIRE garden maintenance-free all season long!

And if you're looking for trees...right now we have available hybrid Walker, Katepwa, and Okanese poplars in plug-rooted form. These young trees are up to 24 inches tall with a 5-inch root including some soil adhered to it. Ready to ship now, can winter outdoors and plant when you are ready next year. Their main advantage over the more widely-available bare-root form? Bare-roots MUST be planted once they come out of winter dormancy; plug-roots can be kept as long as necessary in a shallow tub with and inch or two of water to keep them from drying out, they will even grow this way!

The main advantages of these hybrid poplars? VERY fast growth (up to 4 feet in one year), making them a good choice for windbreaks and shelterbelts; very hardy for the Canadian climate and the way it's CHANGING; phytoremediation and carbon sequestration (OK, big words that mean good things for the environment!); AND...get ready for this...future possibilty of a CASH CROP! If you don't believe me, just click on this address: http://www.hybridpoplar.org/AsACrop.htm to get a quick overview of the idea. Now, don't discount the idea just because the study mentioned was done in Minnesota; I picked that page because it's very easy to understand; there are other studies done by Canadian agencies with the same or similar results (PFRA is one of the biggest ones).

We have heavy embossed black plastic mulch as well; you can buy large or small quantities, making it fit YOUR operation, whether a large tree planting or just your backyard garden.

Are we going to have more kinds of trees available? You bet! For 2011, we will have Cottonwood, Elm, Pine, Spruce, and Caragana. More to come for 2012!

Also available, styrofoam soil conditioner made from 100% RECYCLED styrofoam waste material (you know, that wonderful stuff you don't know what to do with, and some recycling programs won't even take!). For more info on this, go to http://www.help-international.com/ and see the great things they are doing for this planet and the people on it!

Shipping...we ship across Canada via bus service; orders of $100 & up get FREE shipping.

PROMOTION!!! BUY 4 TREES OR TOMATOES, GET 1 FREE!!! I think that's the fairest we can make it; you don't have to buy in huge quantities to get a discount, this works out to 20% off!
